Food. It’s something we don’t think about a lot in North America. We always have it, whatever we want, whenever we want and in abundance. It is life sustaining. Our options are almost too much to fathom.
However, it is not that way for Alex. His family struggles each day to provide the food necessary to sustain his whole family. Dad has left, and mom suffers from depression. An aunt and uncle try to cobble together some part-time jobs to provide, but each day is a struggle. What will we eat today?
Impact Ministries’ agricultural program exists to provide nutritious produce to our 10 Vida schools as part of the schools feeding program. Food that will nourish, food that will allow almost 1,600 children to grow and thrive. Each week fresh produce grown on the Chisac property is transported to each campus and prepared as breakfast for the elementary students and lunch for our junior and senior high students. Over 8,000 meals a week! All to help struggling families feed and nourish their children.
Another aspect of the agricultural program is to develop self-sustaining streams of income for the ministry. Approximately 21.6 acres of property is under cultivation. The crops are then sold in the wholesale market providing additional income to the ministry. The agricultural program employs on average 38 people providing those families income so that they can provide for themselves. Soon we hope to have a seedling business that will sell seedlings propagated in the greenhouse to other area farmers increasing the amount of revenue this part of the ministry could generate!
If you are reading this and have not gone without a meal, stop and say a quick thank you to God for his bountiful provision. If you would like to see children continuing to get nourishing food each school day and the agricultural program continuing to grow and thrive would you consider partnering with the agricultural program with a financial gift? This will allow them to continue expanding their operations. May God’s grace and bounty be poured out here in Guatemala!
