After 104 years, the original adobe-brick building of Vida Chamché school had reached the end of its life-cycle. The walls were brittle and dried out – not good in a country that is prone to earthquakes. The roof and the rafters in the original building were compromised by rust, rot and termites. The roof leaked and the wooden rafters would soon be unsafe.
We are replacing the adobe-brick structure with a two-storey building that will allow us to better utilize the limited space on the Chamché property and will put the children into safe, well-ventilated, and well-lit classrooms. It will also allow us to add more students to both the morning and the afternoon primary school programs at this facility!
The first phase is complete! Our students have already moved into three new lower-level classrooms. We are now starting on Phase 2, which will include two upper level classrooms, the new washrooms for the campus, and sinks so that we can implement the Health in Action campaign at Vida Chamché.
We have kicked off the fundraising for Phase 2 of the Chamché Rebuild as part of our year-end Build a Brighter Future campaign. Donations to Build a Brighter Future will be matched dollar for dollar (up to $110,000) until the end of the year!
